The difference between IMAP and POP3

Step-by-step help for your MostHosted mailbox.

IMAP and POP3 are both protocols for retrieving email, but they work differently:

  • IMAP: leaves emails on the server. Your inbox remains synchronised everywhere, making it suitable for multiple devices.
  • POP3: downloads emails from the server and usually removes them afterwards. It is mainly suitable for use on only one device.
Important

If you want to read your email everywhere, always choose IMAP.
